Mr. John Christiansen

John Christiansen is a Program Coordinator in the Center for Stabilization and Reconstruction Studies. Previously, Mr. Christiansen had been the Director, Defense Healthcare Management Institute, Naval Postgraduate School. As Director, he oversaw delivery of graduate-level education on a variety of healthcare management issues and research into those topics.

Prior to joining the Naval Postgraduate School, Mr. Christiansen's most recent assignment was Principal Director for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Affairs, Office of the Secretary of Defense. Responsibilities included peacekeeping policy and support to coalitions and the United Nations; provision of humanitarian assistance and coordinating disaster responses; oversight of the DoD Humanitarian Demining Program and landmine policy and enhancement of the peacekeeping capabilities of other nations.

From January, 1997 until July, 1999, Mr. Christiansen served as the Deputy Special Coordinator for the African Crisis Response Initiative (ACRI), based at the Department of State. The ACRI program, now incorporated into the Global Peace Operations Initiative, seeks to enhance the capacities of selected African nations to perform peacekeeping activities through the provision of U.S. training and equipment.

From August 1993 until January 1997, Mr. Christiansen served as the Director of the Haiti Task Force, Office of the Secretary of Defense. In this capacity, he coordinated Haiti policy and programs for the Secretary of Defense and the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. Prior to that, Mr. Christiansen was the Country Director for the Caribbean Region of the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Inter-American Affairs with a primary focus on the policies and programs affecting Cuba and Haiti (January 1990 until July 1993).

Mr. Christiansen has been a member of the career Senior Executive Service and was a Presidential Management Intern (Class of 1987).
