Biography
Susan Page Hocevar received her Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University
of Southern California. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Graduate School
of Business and Public Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California
where she teaches courses in organizational behavior, team effectiveness, negotiation
and consensus building, and inter-agency collaboration. Her classes are offered to
resident students (primarily international officers and US Civil Affairs officers)
in master's degree programs related to SSTR (Stability Security, Transition and
Reconstruction); senior military officers (O-6) participating in several executive
programs offered by the NPS Center for Executive Education; and the NPS Executive
MBA program.
Professor Hocevar has two research efforts that are currently on-going. She is
a participating investigator for an Office of Naval Research sponsored research
effort in Adaptive Architectures for Command and Control (since 1999). This research
involves the application of principles of organization theory to modeling alternative
structures designed for adaptability. As part of this work, Professor Hocevar is preparing
a case study on the interagency work performed my RADM LeFever and members of Expeditionary
Strike Group-1 staff (ESG-1) when they were assigned responsibility for the Combined
Disaster Assistance Center in Pakistan following the earthquake in October 2005.
Her second on-going research activity is focused on diagnosing and improving
inter-organizational collaborative capacity. The initial context for this work was
homeland security, but the current effort is examining a broader application of
inter-organizational collaboration. Funding for this project has been received
from the Acquisition Research Program at NPS. The inter-agency collaboration research
is being done in conjunction with NPS professors Gail Thomas and Erik Jansen.
